Georgia is Coming to Visit!


The Georgia Rugby team is planning a visit to Wanaka Primary School.

This is very exciting news. Georgia is a part of the European and Asian continent. What can you find out about the country? Georgia is the light green country on the map.

The Georgian Rugby Team is coming on the 8th September at 11am.

Teams in the Rugby World Cup

There are 20 teams in the World Cup. They are NZ, Australia, Argentina, Russia, France, England, Ireland, Wales, Tonga, Scotland, Italy, Fiji, South Africa, Canada, Georgia, Japan, USA, Romania, Samoa, Namibia.

Haka

The New Zealand All Blacks perform a haka which is well known in NZ - it is the most commonly known haka throughout the country. We learnt about the history of this haka with Whaea Mary-Anne during Maori this week.

Te Rauparaha created the haka we know today as a celebration of his life after he had a lucky escape from people searching for him (enemies). He hid in a food storage pit and saw two hairy legs when he peaked out - this all relates to what the words translate to in English.

Speeches - Home Fun

Over the next two weeks Pod 4 children are going to write their own speech to share with the class in Week 6. They are doing this for Home Fun.

We have listened to speeches and come up with some great success criteria to help us produce brilliant, interesting speeches.






Our Success Criteria (what we will include/do)


  • Clear, easy to hear voice

  • Important information that makes sense

  • Topic words e.g. scrum, conversion, population

  • Use expression in our voice

  • Give eye contact to the audience

  • Use a steady pace of voice

  • Stand still in one spot but use some hand/face gestures

  • Have an introduction, middle and end

  • Use a visual cue to help us explain

  • Add "did you know" or rhetorical questions

  • Practise LOTS in front of people at home or the mirror

  • Link ideas using words like firstly, lastly, next, another idea

Host Cities/Towns World Cup

Today we looked at what cities and towns in New Zealand will be hosting the Rugby World Cup Matches. We plotted them on a NZ map. We also discussed and completed a graphic organiser about the issues that we may need to consider when hosting such a big event such as the Rugby World Cup. We will focus in more detail on the host cities/towns this week.

Kiwiana Writing

Well done to Himaya who really thought carefully and followed instructions today in writing. Here is her show not tell description about Kiwiana. The children were not allowed to tell the reader what they were writing about until the end of their description.

The balls of whero burst from the sweet smelling branches. The strands of red are all in beautiful bunches.

The branches spread out over me and the flower strands sprinkle over my blowing hair.

The smells of fresh leaves and old bark stop my in my tracks.

Leaves rustle and flutter to the ground in the cool breeze.

Winter Writing

This week we have been focussing on writing vivid, interesting descriptions. We are trying really hard to show not tell the reader. We have been using our five senses to help us form ideas. Check out some of the pieces below. They really paint a picture in our mind with words.


"The morning coldness of fog crept through the tight gap in the fogged up window. I step outside and see valleys of pure white. The crisp, fluffy snow crunches under my numb feet. The puddles of glistening ice crackles as I lay a foot on it. The very shallow puddles are violently slippery. The cool airy feeling is swirling around me. It's too cold to be hanging out in the soft powder. I step back inside and the smokey, blazing fire is cracking away. As I take a sip of my boiling hot chocolate my throat feels like needles are stabbing me."

"A powdery white blanket surrouds me. Snowflakes are falling on every tree in town. Every step I take I hear a crunch like someone crunching a hard lolly. My toes go numb each time my teeth chatter. Sad trees drooping with all the sparkly snow flakes that it can carry. Snowmen are everywhere. People throw snowballs at each other."

"Snowflakes were drifting down on the white glistening street as I step outside onto the blanket of fluffy snow. Crunch, crunch, crunch under my boots. The snow-ice crushes under me. I breath in cold air, a shiver runs down my spine. Naked trees are reaching over me as I walk on the dark, gloomy street. I walk home to have a hot chocolate with marshmallows and sit next to a crackling fire."
